‘Don’t Allow Lighters and Matchbox in Metro’ says Delhi Govt.

These days everyone prefers metro train to reach different places near Delhi. AAP government has filed a notice to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to forbid the passengers to carry matchboxes and lighters inside the trains and station premises as it “encourage smoking”.

A lot of people smoke these days and keep either lighters or matchboxes with them but, it doesn’t mean that they would always prefer something like Uber cabs Delhi to travel, when there is a cheap and convenient option available like Delhi metro. But it is believed that allowing lighters and matchboxes inside metro promotes smoking and smoking is a sensitive issue for public places.

In January, DMRC decided to take lighters and matchboxes off from their list of prohibited items. The Passengers were allowed to carry one matchbox and one lighter in metro trains and station premises. But, the government had written to the DMRC that carrying a matchbox or lighter is a violation of Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Rule 2008 under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) said Dr S K Arora, Additional Director (Health), Delhi. He further added “allowance of lighters and matchboxes promotes smoking unwillingly”.

Under Section 4 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, allowing matchboxes and lighters in metro trains and on station premises violation of act. A strict notice has been issued to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (D.M.R.C).
