Idol Immersion or Polluting the Yamuna?

Idol Immersion

The National Green Tribunal is unhappy due to the immersion of statues of Lord Ganesha in Yamuna River in Delhi. On finding the garbage waste and polluted water of Yamuna River, Delhi government has filed a notice to the Delhi Jal Board and Delhi Development Authority. Not only this, but, the tribunal has also filed token report against the concerned authorities for violating the rules which stand against dumping waste in River. There was a time when Yamuna River was one of the places to see in Delhi but, now it is getting so much dirty and unwanted to be seen as a beauty of nature. Also people were often seen swimming in Yamuna River but now instead of Yamuna they would also look up for small and local swimming pools in Delhi.

In a petition related to this matter, it is mentioned that during the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, Yamuna Riverside is immensely filled with the broken pieces from the statues of Lord Ganesha and the excess of material used for worship purpose. Also, the number of statues lies in thousands. The color which is used to paint the statues before the immersion has got mixed up with the water in the river due to which the biochemical oxygen demand of the water present in the river has reached a lethal level.

The same petition reports the news stories that media channels published about the same context. Those media reports said that there are already several reasons due to which water of Yamuna River is degrading, but now after the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi unwillingly the water of Yamuna River is now in a fatal situation. The petitioner in the context of the Durga Puja occasion has asked NGT to prohibit the immersion very strictly.

In 2005, NGT has passed an order to prohibit the immersion of Statues and worship material in the River. All the non-biodegradable substances like plastic and Plaster of Paris were strictly prohibited. Similarly, orders regarding the colors of statues were also given. Merely the statues made up of sand were allowed to be immersed. This allowance led to the immersion of all types of statues by people on such occasions like Navratri and Durga Puja in Delhi.
